Personally, I think that tongues spoken by charismatic preachers (especially on T.V.) are phony and so there's no need in defending their practices. On the other hand, I've witnessed tongues by "Joe Blow" church member and have often wondered if they were... 1) counterfeited by demonic influences(doesn't satan always counterfeit that which is real? )
2) nothing more than an emotional response (tongues that I "heard" were usually accompanied with intense crying), try praying and crying at the same time and you might find yourself "praying in tongues" ?
or 3) an actual excercising of the gift recorded in the New Testament ( my pentecostal great-grandmother was said to have spoken in tongues regualarly in the comfort of her own home).
Though I've grown to accept that tongues are "possible", I have a hard time believing in the common practice of tongue-speaking in our charismatic circles. If "tongues" accompanied sound doctrine and God-centered preaching than I wouldn't be so sceptical. Has there ever been any parallels with the "confusion of tongues" at the tower of Babel with that which is taking place in our churches today? Could it be part of God's judgement on the modern Laodician Church?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
