The four points from Sibbes in this post frame this truth well.
Excerpt:
Again, remember this, that Christ rules us by a spirit of love, from a sense of his love, whereby his commandments are easy to us.

What a timely word and how warming to my affections! I'm in 1 John devotionally and in His kind providence this mornings text was 1 John 3:16 'we know love by this, that He laid down His life for us.' An excerpt from my journal was 'Father, help me to never hear these words and not thank and praise you for Christ.' Is it not astounding to know that Christ's death for His sheep (John 10:14-18) in no way filled some incomplete void in His Triune relationship with the Godhead (Acts 17:25); rather He did so...out of love. Love! And not just any love or what this world believes to be love. Eternally satisfying, pure LOVE from God, in Christ, through the Holy Spirit. And the byproduct of this according to 1 John 3:16 is 'that we know love' by His sacrificial, substitutionary atoning death for us!
