Adopted by God

In light of yesterday's theme in Galatians 3:26, 29; 4:4-7 of being adopted as sons by God:

“Do I know my own real identity? I am a child of God. God is my Father; heaven is my home; every day is one day nearer. My Savior is my brother; every Christian is my brother too. Say it over and over to yourself first thing in the morning, last thing at night, as you wait for the bus, any time when your mind is free, and ask that you may be enabled to live as one who knows it is all utterly and completely true.”
- J.I. Packer, in Knowing God, p. 228.

GG#2 Group(s) Interaction

This past week we focused primarily on God's attributes. We looked at 25 attributes of God, as described in His Word.

This post is designed for groups to interact with other groups. So, post away with scripture, and application of scripture pertaining to what God is saying about Himself that is (currently) making deep impacts on your view of Him.

It thrills me to know that this week there were 5; little, insignificant groups gathering across the mid-south to talk about and worship a gloriously infinite God!

Father, may it be Your good pleasure to give us much grace in pursuing You!

Grace group...group interaction

No, this is not a typo but hopefully a helpful medium for GG discussion since all of us can't be in every group. I, and hopefully others could be encouraged by discussions of God that may have taken place within your group.

Helpful suggestions
1. Post what you learned about God in your group (no inside group jokes, but comments that might help others strive for a right view of God)
2. Keep it concise but don't feel as though you are confined to a single comment.
3. Helpful scriptures that were mentioned or not mentioned.
4. Meditations on Isaiah 40-66 as it relates to God's self-descriptions.

Grace Groups

We just finished our first GG tonight and here were some of the suggestions given for the upcoming week to help us strive to have a high view of God.

Questions to consider:

1. How important or necessary is a high view of God?

2. How might my view of God be vastly different than what God says about Himself in His Word?

3. Am I guilty of domesticating God so that He looks more and more like me?

Guidance in Seeking the Lord this week

  1. Ask Him to radically change your view of Him that it would be more biblical and pleasing to Him resulting in worship that both glorifies Him and gives you greatest joy.
  2. Read Isaiah 40-66 this week writing and meditating on some of God’s self-descriptions.

Memory Work

Isaiah 45:5-8 "I am the Lord, and there is no other; Besides Me there is no God. I will gird you, though you have not known Me; [6] That men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun. That there is no one besides Me. I am the Lord, and there is no other, [7] The One forming light and creating darkness, causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the Lord who does all these.[8] "Drip down, O heavens, from above, and let the clouds pour down righteousness; Let the earth open up and salvation bear fruit, and righteousness spring up with it. I, the Lord, have created it.

Loved by our Thrice Holy God

Along with about 1,200 pastors from around the world, I was loved by God this week at the Desiring God Conference for Pastors. Each session is well worth a listen. Especially Sproul's second session on the Holiness of Christ. Please pray that these messages would bear God-pleasing fruit in my soul.

An Opportunity to Obey

Seeing temptation from God's perspective will go a long way in helping us to make advance in the battle with sin, self, and Satan.
"Do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the wilderness." (Psalm 95:8).
What does that mean? Meribah? Massah? You may be thinking, "I've never been there." Oh yes you have. We all have. Some of us are there even now!

Meribah is the place where Moses struck the rock (twice) instead of speaking to it (once). It was the place where Moses disbelieved God to prove Himself holy among His people. You see, Moses was fed up with God's people, and was given to depravity's impulse rather than God-pleasing obedience.

The worst part about any sin for a true believer is what might have been had I obeyed? What progress in sanctification might have been enjoyed? What experiential nearness to God might have been known? What progress of growth in grace might have taken place?

Every temptation is a "Y" in the road. An opportunity to disobey or obey. On this side of eternity no one will always walk the path of obedience. But that doesn't lessen God's standard! Nor does it comfort the real Christian to excuse his sin.

What is it that takes place in the moments of crisis when we turn to sin instead of to Christ? When the temptation is so real it is as if it were breathing down our neck? Surely there are many things taking place in that moment, but what is the one domino that begins our chain reaction of rebellion against God? In a word, hardening. God pleads, "Do not harden your hearts...as in the day of Massah in the wilderness." Massah means, "temptation." In other words God is saying, "When the temptation to disbelieve Me arises, and your deceitful hearts conceives of another path to success, DO NOT harden your heart! In that moment turn to Me!"

The consequence for disobedience is always great. For Moses and Aaron who sinned at Massah instead of obeying, it meant never entering the rest of God in His land of promise. Who are we to suppose the price is anything less?

Massah, or temptation, is an opportunity to obey.

The Holiness of God and the Response of His People

Believing God rises from seeing His holiness and elicits one proper response from His people -- loving obedience.
"Because You Have Not Believed Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them." (Numbers 20:12)
