The Gospel Jesus Preached

What did Jesus actually say when he "preached the gospel?"

Luke 20:1
And it came about on one of the days while He was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, that the chief priests and the scribes with the elders confronted Him.
The gospel, according to I Corinthians 15:3, is the good news that God has reconciled sinners to Himself through the Scripture-fulfilling death of His Son, His burial, and His resurrection on the third day according to the Scriptures.

While in the temple (account of Luke 20) what do you imagine Jesus said when He "preached the gospel" (Euaggelizomenou can also be translated "good news")? Did He tell them He would die for their sin, be buried, rise the third day?

Thoughts?

He very likely said,

"This is my Bible. I am what it says I am, I can do what it says I can do . . . "

And then He followed that with a discourse on the five purposes of the church . . .

No really, I think He often preached the things found in the Sermon on the Mount. Since His focus was for people to repent for the Kingdom of Heaven was at hand, I believe He preached on the Kingdom of Heaven. He demonstrated the KOH was near and that the gospel message (his life, death, resurrection) is embraced by those who hunger and thirst after Christ's righteousness (not their own), and believe that His kingdom comes to the humble and the repentant (those who mourn).

He probably didn't share this.

Nor leave them with any of these.

He might've given them a copy of this!
:o)

But really...good question...

Perhaps he used the same approach he used here.

I find it interesting that Jesus began his public ministry preaching repentance from sin (see John the Baptist) after His 40 day temptation from Satan. I think this prepared Him to know from a human perspective what our greatest needs are as humans and that is repentance from a sinful heart. Jesus obviously taught in parables and preached sermons but the overall message of His Gospel was to repent from sin. I also like what Paris Reidhead has to say about "Preaching the Gospel":

"If I had my way, I would declare a moratorium on public preaching of "the plan of Salvation" in America for one to two years. Then I would call on everyone who has use of the airwaves and the pulpits to preach the holiness of God, the righteousness of God, and the Law of God, until sinners would cry out, "What must I do to be saved?" Then I would take them off in a corner and whisper the Gospel to them. I wouldn't just use John 3:16. Such drastic action is needed because we have gospel -hardened a generation of sinners by telling them how to be saved before they have any understanding of why they need to be saved."
